It Came From Greek Mythology What meanings did myths about gods, goddesses and heroes have for the ancient Greeks and what meanings do the Greek myths have for us today? Key Learning Task Students will explore the world of Greek mythology to recognise that myths can explain the unexplainable, that some are based on fantastic beings, known people and events and that they continue to have a significant impact and influence on our lives today. They will investigate and describe the basic plots of several myths as well as identify the main themes (heroes; how things came to be; consequences of unwise behaviour) and relate them to modern society and its beliefs. In order to demonstrate their understanding students will choose from a selection of independent written, oral and design tasks. They will also collaboratively write, rehearse and produce a play script based on one of the Greek myths studied. The students will….. Explore the links between ancient Greek culture and myths and Australian culture. Analyse and reflect on how Greek myths, poetry and plays held characters accountable and teach lessons about behaviours, choices and action. Investigate and research the histories of words that come from Greek myths. Explore and explain how the ancient Greeks used myths to explain natural phenomenon. Select from a range of written tasks, including an opinion essay, newspaper article, rap song, letter to demonstrate their understanding of the influence and roles of gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines in Greek mythology. Communicate orally to an audience by delivering a campaign speech, dramatic monologue or live news broadcast. Collaboratively write, rehearse and perform a play script based on one of the myths studied.
