Purple Snow at Dayboro SS

It's Purple Snow season at Dayboro State School! Spring has sprung and the Jacarandas are flowering. What a colourful time of the year!

YEAR 3 UNDERWATER WORLD EXCURSION

Year 3 as part of their unit went on an excursion to Underwater World to learn more about the conservation and maintenance of our waterways and environment and the animals that inhabit these areas. The children enjoyed the excursion and learnt many interesting things.

3S - On Friday 3S and 3W had an excursion to Underwater World. When we arrived we were split into two groups, 3S were the Stingrays and 3W were the Sharks. I was in the Stingrays. We first went to a pool of fish. I held mum’s shiniest ring under the light and a fish saw it and it sprayed water at me. Then we went on a conveyer belt that went under a glass tunnel. It had a lot of fish in it, my favourite in there was the moray eel. I learnt that a spider crab can grow up to 7 meters long.

3W - On Friday, 3W and 3S went to Underwater World with some parents. We learnt a lot of cool stuff like; crocodiles eat rocks to crush their food, some crabs can lift up a small child, the otters at Underwater World do a toilet dance, otters are very clever and that some fish turn into girls when they are six years old. I had a fantastic time at Underwater World.

Premier's Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the 105 Dayboro students who received certificates for completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year. Each of these students read 20 books at their current reading level.

As the Premier said in her letter of congratulations, literacy underpins every stage and subject of learning at school and for the rest of a student’s life. Participation has helped to build the skills of every child who undertook the challenge. Many thanks to the teachers and parents who inspired the Prep to Year 7 students to take up the Reading Challenge this year.

Year 5's go Mountain Hiking!

This term, the Year 5 group within the 5/6 class are involved in an ‘Adventure and Experiential Learning’ program.  This program involves the children learning through challenging experiences.  Each week, the group will be involved in different team building exercises where they learn to recognise everyone’s different strengths, support each other, demonstrate leadership, and manage and resolve conflict.

Last Tuesday, the group went hiking up Mt Ngungun in the Glasshouse Mountains.  For many of the children, this was a difficult walk and the support from the whole group was very pleasing to see, and certainly much needed by the end. Blade was our leader this week, and he carried out this huge responsibility very well!

Here are some thoughts from the children in the class:

“Hiking Mt Ngungun was a really great experience. Some of us thought it would be smooth going all the way up, but we were wrong ! It was very rocky and a difficult challenge. When we finally reached the top we realised that we had succeeded our task. The view was amazing while we ate our lunch, we could see the road and even the cars. On the way down the mountain, a lot of us helped each other as it was difficult and very slippery. The experience was like no other !”
